The settlement of Brookfield dates back to 1889 when a Chicago lawyer by the name of Samuel Eberly Gross decided to sell building lots mapped out from farms and woods he had obtained along the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad line. His development was called “Grossdale”, and his vision was to lay out a residential area where affordable housing could be purchased by hard working middle class families. Gross erected a train station as one of his first buildings in this novel subdivision. Other subdivisions by the names of Hollywood and West Grossdale were added a few years later, each one having its own separate train station. The village of “Grossdale” was incorporated in 1893, but the name was changed over to Brookfield later on in reference to Salt Creek. In the 1920’s streets and avenues were paved, and this gave residents the advantage of being able to travel to the city of Chicago. The Brookfield Zoo is one of the most popular attractions in Brookfield. It opened in 1934 and still gives locals and tourists plenty of entertaining pleasure today.
